What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are treatments designed to reduce the appearance of irregularities on the skin’s surface and reveal a smooth, revitalised texture through regenerating and resurfacing the skin. They remove the top layers of the skin, help to stimulate collagen remodeling, reduce tonal discolouration, improve skin texture and hydration, reduce congestion and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

Taking care of your skin involves many different elements, including clinical peels. However, it’s important to understand that peels are not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are many different types of peels available and it’s crucial to seek advice from a qualified skin professional before beginning a series of chemical peels.

Please note:

It’s important to note that these peels should only be performed under the supervision of an expert in the medical field. Light, superficial peels can be done by a qualified clinician and typically involve the use of alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA’s) like lactic and glycolic acids, and beta hydroxyl acids (BHA’s) like salicylic acid. The strength of peels can vary from 20% AHA for more sensitive skin types to 60% AHA for more tolerant skin types. It’s best to follow the guidance of your skin therapist when deciding on the most appropriate treatment for your skin type and concerns.

Peels can be especially beneficial for those dealing with acne, congestion, blackheads, sun damage, and fine lines. Lactic acid can remove the top layer of skin while salicylic acid penetrates the follicles to help unblock pores, reduce inflamed skin, and remove trapped oil and dead cells, making peels a great option for those with acne. For those with surface pigmentation and sunspots, AHA’s can help lift surface cells and even out pigmentation. Those with fine lines may notice a reduction in their appearance after a series of AHA peels, as exfoliation helps the skin regenerate more efficiently and remove rough surface cells.

Recommended use:

While one strong, deeper peel may be effective when performed under controlled medical supervision, a series of six to eight fortnightly to monthly peels is generally recommended for best results. It’s better to have lighter peels over a longer period of time than one aggressive peel that could cause damage to the skin. Many clients begin with lower-level peels (such as lactic 20-30%) and gradually increase the strength over the course of the series, up to 60% if tolerated. Your skin therapist can help you determine the most appropriate level for your skin type.
